London’s economy and way of life has been brought to its knees, not just by COVID, but also through the deliberate, ongoing neglect of the government.
Nobody understands this better than SMEs and those operating small businesses on the high street. Enough is enough! It is time for change. It's time to take the foot off the throat of entrepreneurs and small business operators, and release London's full potential.
Less Waste, Lower Taxes
With a £17 billion budget, I believe London can restore front line services across the board affordably without raising taxes - by streamlining the current bureaucracy at City Hall.
By continually raising congestion charges, we risk creating a 'false economy', because it deters people from visiting the capital and spending money in our hospitality sector, thereby driving many businesses to the wall. I advocate therefore a 20% reduction in the congestion charge and removal of the impost over weekends.
No More Stranglehold on London Businesses
I also advocate a recalibration of business rates, to be based on 2% of turnover, and, for the first time, to include online sales within the Greater London Area. SMEs with a turnover below £1 million per annum will be exempt; thereby freeing up small businesses from costly regulation - a permanent exemption to allow them to get back on their feet and compete on a level playing field.
Expanding business rates to include online purchases within the GLA is designed to ensure that the Council Tax rate can be maintained without further increase.
Council Tax to stay at the present level until I've had a look at the books, as the accounts are opaque; but with the promise that savings made from cuts to waste and rooting out of corruption will be passed on to Londoners.
Let’s put London back on its feet again. With Direct Democracy and common sense leadership, together we can do this.
